According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), of the 80 public and non-profit schools in the state, 53 have accredited undergraduate business schools and 41 have accredited graduate business schools.1 These schools are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), or International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). All of the schools listed below are public or non-profit and are regionally-accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SASC).

    It is vital to choose a school that has its business program accredited by external institutions. Business program accreditation ensures clear program goals and outcomes and that the school follows a set of national and international standards. Accredited schools must also prove engagement with business practitioners during the program, allowing students to learn contextually and in the field.

    The average cost of an undergraduate business degree in Texas before financial aid is $15,655, with 36 universities offering undergraduate programs that are more affordable than this average. The least expensive institution is Houston Community College, with a $3,360 and an average of $3,601 offered in financial aid per student.

    Rice University has the lowest acceptance rate for undergraduate programs at 15%. The University of Texas at El Paso and the University of the Incarnate Word has 100% and 92% acceptance rates.

    While Rice University has one of the most expensive and selective programs in Texas, it also has the highest graduation rate of 93%. The school with the third-highest graduation rate, Texas A&M University – College Station, at 80%, accepts 67% of its applications, making it a desirable option for applicants.

    Job Outlook for Business School Graduates in Texas

    Job prospects for business graduates in Texas are looking good, with average prospective annual growth for business-related occupations in the business sector at 9.22%.6 Within these occupations, marketing specialists and financial managers have the fastest expected growth rates at 22.8% and 18.7% respectively according to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data.5

    The BLS is a unit of the United States Department of Labor and is the primary fact-finding agency in labor, economics, and statistics. Information compiled ranges from occupational employment to wage estimates, which is an excellent source of statistical data.

    BLS data shows that the average annual wage across all occupations in Texas in 2016 was $46,181.6 For business-related occupations, however, the average was $77,250, a figure more than 60% above the state average.6 Annual wages for business occupation subcategories in Texas ranged from $42,870 for tax preparers to $218,880 for chief executives.6
