Different Types of Business Degrees

As with many degrees, there are several different types of degrees for each industry. Business degrees are no exception. Each of the types of degrees offers something different by way of concentration or curriculum focus and requirements. However, almost all programs require 120-122 hours of core curriculum and can be completed in about years for a full-time student. However, online education can enable an individual to control the pace at which they complete the degree, allowing for more time or allowing the student to accelerate their graduation. A typical program divides its course requirements, on average, into roughly 50% business, or professionally related core courses, and 50% in general education electives. These averages can vary 10% either way. Additionally, some schools require designated courses to be completed at the institution prior to applying to enter the business school as an undergraduate candidate. Additional admissions requirements can be, GPA requirements, prerequisite math skills and high school class rank. However, these requirements, or lack thereof, depending on the program and the school.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, BSBA is a fit for students who have broader business and management interests. BSBA programs provide analytical and conceptual tools required for a concentration in a more analytical field, such as finance or accounting, but also build an equally as strong foundation in business skills. Many BSBA programs incorporate core business requirements into the average 122-hour course credit degree requirement, covering subjects such as, business presentation, ethics, leadership, marketing and organizational behavior alongside hard skill courses in economics, accounting, calculus and statistics

Overall, students graduate with a well-rounded background in business and have a strong foundation in financial tools to either pursue a career or graduate degree in both analytical and softer skilled business functions.

Bachelor of Business Administration

Bachelor of Business Administration or BBA is not unlike a BSBA, except that it tends to be a little less concentrated in math and analysis and a little more focused on general business skills. Students in this route would also be adequately prepared to enter an early career role in areas such as, operations manager, human resources, and accounting, to name just a few, or to pursue a BBA course or other graduate degree in business.

Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration

Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration or BABA is very similar to BBA, in terms of curriculum. However, it is even more liberal arts-based and generally has more general education requirements than business requirements and more general education requirements than both a BSBA or BBA.

BS in Business Management

BS in Business Management or BBM follows a similar 120-hour course requirement, similarly divided to the BSBA and BBA, covering the areas of statistical applications in business, business ethics, investments, business and society, economics. Unlike the BSBA, BBA or BABA, the BMM has a concentration in management and therefore curriculums do incorporate courses that specifically focus on developing those skills.

What Will I Learn During my Business Degree?

The curriculum for business programs will differ from institution to institution as does the type of degree offered, i.e. a BBA or a BSBA, or BS in Business Management. Additionally, there is usually a minimum of 120 hours of required courses, over half of which will be professional, i.e. core, requirements within each program and these core requirements tend to be somewhat similar across the degrees. Students in most bachelor business degree programs will be required to complete courses in the following general areas: foundations of business, marketing principles, accounting, macroeconomics, microeconomics, business law, marketing, business, and operational management. Many schools that offer degrees in business, also require that students choose a specific concentration within the business scope to complement their business degree. Additionally, BABA and BBA have more general education courses required than a BS in Business, which tend to have a more analytically focused curriculum.

Most of the degrees in business follow suit with general higher education program standards in that a high school diploma, or GED equivalent, is a prerequisite for a degree in business. Additionally, many institutions require SAT or ACT scores. However, that isn’t always the case with online programs. Many of the undergraduate business degree programs are offered through the business school at a university. As such, some schools require that finance students meet additional academic requirements prior to pursuing a degree in finance. ACT/SAT categorial scores, high school grade point average, and high school class rank may all play a role in freshman admissions to a finance degree program. Additionally, current students of an institution who transfer into a business program within their institution can sometimes be required to complete a certain number of credit hours, outside of those required for a business degree, and maintain B level GPA before they are considered for a transfer into the business track. Again, these requirements are not standardized and will depend greatly upon the school to which a student applies.

Career Outlook and Options with a Business Degree

According to the United States Department of Labor, individuals with a business background play many different roles within an institution, such as those in accounting, financial analysis, operations, IT management, organizational development, human resources and management analysts. Curiously, many individuals who pursue a Bachelor’s in Business degree will work along-side their accountant and finance degree contemporaries, especially in early career roles. However, unlike most accounting and finance majors, most Bachelor of Business degree programs also focus on soft skill development. Therefore, additional job opportunities in human resources, occupational development and many other fields may be available to Business degree track students. Nonetheless, a degree in business is considered a way to enter the upward-trending career paths that, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, are due to expand an estimated 10% over the next decade. Job stability, diverse job opportunities and salary are all factors that influence individuals to pursue a bachelors in business. So, what are typical career paths for those studying business?

Due to the combination of hard and soft skills development, the list of prospective careers for business degree holders follows a broad spectrum. Of the more analytical side, is a public accountant. A public accountant, whether working for an individual, corporation or government, reconciles documents that are submitted because of legal requirements. Tax forms and financial statements are two of the most prevalent legally required areas of documentation. Many public accountants are CPA’s, or Certified Public Accountants, and their ranges of responsibilities can encompass anything from reconciling for the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission), to working with law enforcement agencies to uncover financial crimes, as is the case with forensic accountants. On the other hand, the work done by management accountants is private, utilized within an organization to affect business decisions. This area of accounting can delve into situations that utilize not just hard skills in number analysis, but general business skills as well. Asset management for a company or financial performance analyses are specialty areas in this field. Professionals in this arena analyze financial information in order to influence management to make fiscally responsible decisions within their business.

Shifting over to the other side of the skills balance we would find careers in Social Media Marketing. Social Media marketing has grown to become a significant part of today’s commerce. With this evolution, the role of digital brand manager has become very significant to the health of many companies. Digital brand managers manage a company’s marketing campaign and image, promoting brand awareness within a digital space, often across multiple digital platforms.

To be successful in the role, digital marketing managers need to have a strong grasp of marketing techniques in addition to being technologically savvy, as keeping abreast on the latest technologies is vital to their success.
