    Online MBA Programs in Utah

    1. Southern Utah University – School of Business

    Southern Utah University has offered an AACSB-accredited MBA program fully online since 2014 with the same curriculum as the on-campus degree program. One of the benefits of the online degree is that you will pay in-state tuition regardless of where you live. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in business can finish the program in as little as one year, although you can also study part-time to fit around other commitments or work.

    You can begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer terms. Once you are accepted to the program, you will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA each term to continue. In 2016, US News and World Report ranked the program in a tie for #95 among Online MBA Programs across the country.

    Program Admission

    You should have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply. If the degree is not in business, you will need to take foundational courses before starting the MBA curriculum. You will need to complete the online application form to apply to the program and submit your transcripts, GMAT or GRE scores, and three recommendation letters.

    2. University of Utah – David Eccles School of Business

    The University of Utah has offered an AACSB-accredited online MBA with a general business focus since 2014 and was ranked 44th in the country by US News and World Report in 2016. The same professors teach both the on-campus and online MBA programs at the university. The online program includes 48 credit hours of study and takes two years to complete part-time. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer, and most students spend approximately 20-25 hours on coursework per week throughout the year.

    Program courses are offered at set times during the year so that you will take two courses at a time in either five- or 10-week blocks. Because of this structure, it is highly recommended that you study at the program administrators’ pace to complete your degree on time. Although the degree is offered primarily online, students must attend a three-day residency on-campus as part of their coursework in the second year.

    Several scholarship opportunities are also available for both in-state and out-of-state students that may help offset the cost.

    Program Admission

    You will need to have at least one year of professional work experience and a bachelor’s degree in any subject. A GPA of at least 3.0 is recommended but not necessary. In 2016, the average work experience among entrants was seven years, and the average age was 31. In terms of scores, the average GMAT score was 560, the average GRE scores were 155 for both verbal and quantitative, and the average GPA was 3.4.

    To apply, you will need to complete the online application and include screenshots of your transcripts. You must then send official copies of your transcripts, a resume, a letter of recommendation, a personal essay, and your GMAT or GRE scores to the university. If your undergraduate GPA was below 3.0, the university encourages you to send an additional letter of recommendation and personal essay to strengthen your application. International students must send the same application package and also include TOEFL or IELTS scores. If your application is approved, you will also need to pass an interview with an MBA program official either in-person or via Skype.

    In exceptional cases, the GMAT or GRE requirement may be waived. If you are interested, here is a list of AACSB accredited online MBA programs no GMAT required.

    Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for each start date, and once the class is full, applications will be reviewed for the waitlist or will be considered for the following start date.

    3. Utah State University – Jon M. Huntsman School of Business

    The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business has been awarding business degrees since 1894. It offers an online AACSB-accredited Professional Broadcast MBA (PBMBA) that can be based at one of the university’s many campuses across Utah and one campus in Idaho. The PBMBA is a general business degree geared towards working professionals that follows the same format as the Professional MBA offered on-campus at Thanksgiving Point; however, in the PBMBA program, students do not attend classes on campus. Instead, students must be available to join online classes at set times on either evenings or weekends.

    Five campuses offer the program via weekend classes, and six campuses offer evening classes. Weekend classes are typically held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, while evening classes are typically held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Both programs require students to take courses throughout the year, including during the summer term. The degree takes two years to complete through part-time study and follows a cohort model by which all students begin to progress through the entire curriculum at the same pace. This allows online students to interact with the same group throughout the program despite living across the state or country.

    Students also have the chance to interact during Global Learning Experiences offered each year during Spring Break. No full-time study options are offered online. When you are ready, you can apply to start the program in the fall, spring, or summer terms. In 2016, US News and World Report ranked the university in a tie for 17th place for its online graduate programs.

    Program Admission

    To be admitted, you need a bachelor’s degree and transcripts to complete the prerequisite courses in Accounting, Excel, Finance, Marketing, and Statistics. If you do not have these prerequisites, you will need to take the university’s appropriate preparatory courses before you can begin the MBA curriculum. To start the application process, fill out the online application, and pay the $55 application fee. You should then send your official transcripts, GMAT or GRE scores, three recommendation letters, and a resume to the graduate office. The minimum accepted GMAT or GRE score is at or above the 50th percentile recorded by the testing bodies.

    MBA Programs in Utah

    This section reviews AACSB-accredited MBA programs in Utah offered through on-campus teaching methods. Although some institutions offer online courses, most of your courses will be taken through face-to-face methods in these MBA programs.

    1. Brigham Young University (BYU) – Marriott School of Management

    BYU is a private institution run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It offers two types of AACSB-accredited MBA degrees: the full-time MBA and the Executive MBA (EMBA) for working professionals with at least five years of experience. The MBA degree includes 64 credit hours taken over two years, and students cannot work during the first year of the program. Core courses are taken during the first year, and concentration courses are taken in the second year. You can also complete a dual degree and earn your MBA with either a Juris Doctor (JD) in Law or a Master of Science (MS) in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering.

    In the EMBA program, you can earn your degree in two years by taking evening or weekend classes for a total of 54 credit hours. EMBA students attend a five-day residency at the beginning of each year and complete an international business trip at the end of the program.

    For the MBA and the EMBA programs, you must have an undergraduate degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 and GMAT scores. You will need to submit an online application with the $50 fee, GMAT scores, a personal statement and background, an ecclesiastical endorsement, a resume, three reference letters, and your transcripts. To be accepted into a dual degree, you must meet the requirements of both programs.

    2. Southern Utah University – School of Business

    Southern Utah University (SUU) offers an AACSB-accredited MBA that consists of 30 credit hours and can be completed in as little as two academic terms of full-time study. You can also study part-time if you are a working professional as courses are usually offered in the evenings. The program has several concentration options, and you may choose to complete a senior project or thesis instead of three credit hours of electives. SUU students have access to a range of resources and services at the Business Resource Center and the Small Business Development Center. The school also offers an international business experience that enables MBA students to study in Paris, France, at the university’s partner institution, INSEEC.

    You must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA to be eligible. If your degree did not include significant business coursework, you would likely need to complete 25-34 credit hours of foundational coursework before you can begin the MBA core curriculum.     3. University of Utah – David Eccles School of Business

    The University of Utah offers three AACSB-accredited MBA degree options on-campus: a full-time MBA, a Professional MBA (PMBA), and an Executive MBA (EMBA). The full-time MBA takes two years to complete and begins in the fall term. The program is delivered in a cohort format, with approximately 60-70 students progressing together through the curriculum each year. The curriculum includes 62 credit hours, with several concentration options available. In 2015, Bloomberg Business Week ranked this program #59 across the country and #9 in the west.

    The PMBA is designed for working professionals and offers evening courses. The program also takes two years to complete and includes 48 credit hours of study and several concentrations. The EMBA is also designed for working professionals and takes two years to complete, but it offers weekend rather than evening classes and does not offer concentrations. Bloomberg Business has ranked PMBA #42 and EMBA #22 in the country compared to similar programs.

    Program Admission

    You must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA for any of the degree options. For the full-time MBA, at least two years of work experience is preferred but not required. To apply, submit your online application, undergraduate transcripts, a resume, at least one personal essay, at least one recommendation letter, the $55 application fee, and your GMAT or GRE scores (may be waived for EMBA candidates).     4. Utah State University – Jon M. Huntsman School of Business

    There are many ways to earn an AACSB-accredited MBA degree at Utah State University. The one-year, full-time program can be completed independently or as part of a dual degree with a Master of Human Resources (MHR) or a Master of Management Information Systems (MMIS). You can also complete a Professional MBA (PMBA) through the weekend, the on-campus program for working professionals at the Thanksgiving Point campus, or a Professional Shingo MBA for working professionals who want to specialize in the Shingo Method operational management.

    To be admitted to any of the MBA programs, you must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester credits. If your degree did not include foundational business coursework, you would need to take prerequisite courses before beginning the MBA program. You will also need to submit an online application, your GMAT or GRE scores, three references, and a summary of your career goals. For the PMBA and the Shingo MBA, the GMAT or GRE requirement may be waived if you have at least six years of managerial work experience.

    5. Utah Valley University – Woodbury School of Business

    Utah Valley University has been offering the MBA since 2010. You can earn an AACSB-accredited MBA degree either through the full-time, accelerated program or the part-time program for working professionals. Both programs include 36 credit hours of study; however, the full-time program takes one year to complete, whereas the part-time program takes two years to complete. Accounting and Management concentrations are offered in both programs.

    Program Admission

    To apply, you will need to submit an online application with the $45 fee, transcripts from your undergraduate institution, your GMAT or GRE scores, two essays, three professional references, and a resume. The GMAT or GRE test may be waived if you have a cumulative 3.6 GPA and attend an interview with the program director.

    Foundational Coursework

    For the full-time MBA, you must have prerequisite coursework in Financial and Managerial Accounting, Principles of Finance, Statistics, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics. For the part-time MBA, you must have prerequisite coursework in Financial and Managerial Accounting, Principles of Finance, and Statistics. If your undergraduate degree is business-related and your transcripts show you earned at least a B- in equivalent courses, you may be eligible to waive these requirements. If you are applying to the Accounting concentration, you must also have the following prerequisites with at least a C grade before beginning the MBA curriculum: Intermediate Accounting I & II, Cost Management, Individual Income Tax, Accounting Information Systems, Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing, and Corporate Tax.

    6. Weber State University – Goddard School of Business & Economics

    The Goddard School of Business & Economics at Weber State University offers an AACSB-accredited MBA program and in 2014, the school was included in the Princeton Review book, “The Best 295 Business Schools.” The MBA program offers a great amount of flexibility for working professionals or full-time students. You can start the program in the fall, spring, or summer terms and easily switch between full-time and part-time study as needed.

    The minimum number of credits to graduate is 36, and the fast-track option enables applicants with a business-related bachelor’s degree to complete the program in as little as 1.5 years. For applicants with non-business degrees, the program will take a minimum of two years. The school also offers a dual degree program that allows you to earn an MBA and a Master of Health Administration (MHA).

    Program Admission

    To be eligible for the program, you need a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. The application form is available online, and you will need to upload your resume and essay answers and provide email addresses for two professional references. You will need to mail your transcripts and GMAT or GRE scores to the university as well. GMAT or GRE scores may only be waived in exceptional circumstances.

    Students are accepted with or without a business major, but this will impact the number of credits you must earn to complete your degree. If you have a business-related or economics degree, you will likely be eligible to waive the foundational coursework,

    Additional Online MBA Programs

    1. Westminster College – Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business

    Westminster College offers a Project-Based online MBA that can be completed in as little at 18 months. The project-based curriculum requires students to complete five projects, each with different requirements, to demonstrate key business skills necessary in the working world. The projects include both independent and group work, and each student has the support of a faculty mentor throughout the program. While most of the program is completed through online methods, students must visit the campus for a two-day residency during each project, and the program has a required 10-day global learning trip included in the tuition price.

    The curriculum comprises 39 credit hours and a Major Field Test in Business that must be passed during the final project residency. The curriculum focuses on the following core competencies: communication, ethics and social responsibility, critical, analytical, and reflective thinking, leadership and teamwork, organizational performance, understanding markets, and strategic and global thinking.

    The school also offers a Master Track Mentoring program that is open to MBA students at an additional cost. Participants are matched with a business leader in Utah and attend professional development sessions together on Saturdays during the school year. All participants must attend at least one session per month, although greater participation of both mentors and mentees is highly encouraged.

    Program Admissions

    You can apply to the program using either the online application or by mailing a paper application. You will also need to pay a $50 application fee, although this may be waived if you attend an information session or campus visit. You will need to mail your transcripts, essay responses, two recommendation letters, and employer letter of support, resume, and GMAT scores to the graduate school office. If you have either a Bachelor of Business Administration or a Graduate Leadership Certificate from Westminster College, you may be eligible for the Fast-Track MBA program that requires only 30 credit hours of study.

    Foundational Coursework

    All students are required to pass the same project-based competencies, although the type of projects may vary according to each student’s interests and experience.

    • Strategic Leadership (8 credit hours) – You will perform a SWOT analysis to develop strategy for a real-world firm.
    • Consumers in the Market (8 credit hours) – You will use quantitative analysis and metrics to develop new marketing strategies and evaluate current market performance.
    • Enterprise Performance (8 credit hours) – You will use balanced scorecards to evaluate operations within the firm and develop financial forecasts for future innovation.
    • Implementing SUtahtrategy (8 credit hours) – You will develop management and leadership skills by evaluating the implementation of your strategic plans.
    • Business Planning (7 credit hours) – You will create a fully-developed business plan for a real-world firm or start-up as your capstone project.

    Utah MBA Salary and Job Outlook

    According to several different statistical sources, choosing to do an online MBA in Utah may have advantages, given the positive outlook for all types of management positions. According to the Utah Department of Workforce Service, the state is expected to have an annual growth rate of 2.5% in the Business and Financial Operations industry from 2012-2022, which includes 1,320 replacement openings and 1,670 new jobs every year and a 2.3% growth rate for Management positions, including 1,460 replacement jobs and 1,690 new jobs every year.1 The regions projected to experience the greatest growth rates in Business and Financial Operations are Southwest Utah (4.6%), Provo/Orem (3.8%), Washington County (3.8%), Bear River (2.8%), and Salt Lake City (2.6%). 1 The regions projected to experience the greatest growth in Management positions are Washington County (3.3%) and Provo/Orem (3.2%).1 However, the largest number of positions by region are located in Salt Lake City, where 116,000 individuals were employed in Professional and Business Services positions in 2016.2 Short term projections are also positive, with Professional and Business Services positions expected to grow by 3.7% by the end of 2016, creating 13,845 new jobs.3

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the following salary and career outlook information for Utah from 2014-2024:

    • Chief Executives positions are expected to rise 18%, which is positive given the 1% decrease expected nationally; however, the median salary in Utah ($120,900) was much lower than the national median ($173,300). 4
    • General and Operations Managers positions are projected to experience above national growth (25% compared to 7%), although median salaries were also lower compared to the national median ($72,600 compared to $97,300). 5
    • Managers, All Others are also projected to experience 25% growth compared to 4% nationally. This group earned a median salary of $88,500 compared to $105,100 nationally. 6
    • Management Analyst positions are expected to increase by 37% compared to 14% nationally. The average salary was $72,200 compared to $80,900 nationally. 7
    • Financial Managers may experience a 22% growth rate compared to 7% nationally. The median salary was $95,500 compared to the national median of $115,300.8

    • Human Resources Managers report a median salary of $58,866
    • MBA graduates report a salary range from $49,771-$134,638
    • MBA Finance graduates report a salary range from $61,439-$177,347
    • MBA Accounting graduates report a salary range from $49,435-$139,000
    • MBA graduates from Brigham Young University reported the highest average early career salary at $84,100, which was followed by the University of Utah ($65,600), Westminster College ($66,700), and Utah State University ($62,200)
    • After gaining at least ten years of experiences, graduates from the University of Utah earned slightly higher average salaries, reporting $111,000, compared to Brigham Young graduates, who reported earning $110,000. Westminster graduates reported an average salary of $97,600, followed by Utah State ($96,400).
